“I’m sure one way or another, he’ll be underpaid.”
It’s no secret to anyone who follows the NFL that Patrick Mahomes is currently the most valuable and iconic player in the entire league right now. But unfortunately for him, it’s unlikely he will ever be fully compensated in accordance with his worth. And it sounds like the Kansas City Chiefs know that.
Patrick Mahomes will certainly get a new contract in the coming years – likely after Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert sign new deals to set the market.
But Kansas City Chiefs team owner Clark Hunt had quite a brutal message ahead of the eventual contract negotiations: “coming up with a dollar value for what Mahomes means to KC would be a challenging endeavor.”
Hunt explained that it’s difficult to even quantify Mahomes’ value financially, conceding that Mahomes will end up earning less than he’s worth throughout his career as a result. “I don’t know that there’s really a way to quantify it financially. And, no matter what he makes over his career, I’m sure one way or another, he’ll be underpaid,” Hunt said according to Pro Football Talk.
Of course, Mahomes will still finish his career as a very wealthy man – his current contract is worth $500 million – but it’s still a brutal reality that he simply won’t get paid what he’s worth.
