The Kansas City Chiefs lost two of their wide receivers in free agency to theNew England Patriots and theNew York Jets. To address this loss, the Chiefs looked towards the2023 NFL Draft to find a new addition to their team.
The Chiefs found their man in the second round of the draft, selectingRashee Rice, a wide receiver from SMU, with the 55th overall pick. What made this selection special was the involvement of the Chiefs’ star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.

Analyst Adam Lefkoe revealed that Mahomes had been texting him, stating that he had thrown passes to Rice during their sessions in Dallas. Mahomes then shared that he has input on all offensive guys and played a role in the Chiefs selecting Rice.

As Rice received the call from the Chiefs informing him of his selection, Mahomes also gave him a call, which was caught on camera. Rice confirmed that he had caught some throws from Mahomes and praised his passing abilities, stating that Mahomes “put it right where it needed to be.”
Rice had a fantastic season at SMU, recording 96 receptions for 1,344 yards and 10 touchdowns on 156 targets, according to Pro Football Focus. Over four seasons at SMU, Rice had 233 receptions for 3,111 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Now, Rice will have the opportunity to catch passes from Mahomes on the professional stage. He joins a wide receiver room that already has Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, and Richie James. Chiefs fans can’t wait to see Rice and Mahomes in action together on the field in the upcoming season.
