Who Is Patrick Mahomes’ Doctor and How Does Star MVP Deal With His Injuries?

pm Lombardi Trophy

Patrick Mahomes had quite an injury scare in the runup to the Super Bowl LVII clash with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier in February. Many thought he might even miss the big game due to that. But with the efforts of a doctor, he played and won the Super Bowl title for his franchise and the city. Who is the Chiefs QB’s doctor who made it possible?

This is not the first time that Mahomes has dealt with an injury in his career. How does the star QB deal with injury setbacks?

The miraculous doctor

The ankle injury that Patrick Mahomes sustained in the playoffs could have dealt a big blow to the Chiefs‘ Super Bowl ambitions. And the team’s chief Orthopaedic surgeon assumed the worst after the scare.

“I (initially) thought the worst for sure. We knew pretty early that he had a good chance to come back from this in a timely matter. His imaging and everything suggested that, as well. It’s one of those things generally you can rehab and do OK with for a lot of people,” Dr J Paul Schroeppel said, according to Ian Rapoport.

The Orthopaedic surgeon, who is also the assistant team physician of MLB outfit the Kansas City Royals, worked hard on the QB. And he made it possible for Mahomes to play at his best in the AFC championship game and the Super Bowl.

Schroeppel is an alumnus of the University of Kansas Medical School and did his fellowship at the TRIA Orthopaedic Center in Minneapolis. He specializes in the surgical management of all sports injuries.

The Kansas-native is also the Program Director for the Orthopedic Sports Medicine fellowship program at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Schroeppel helped keep the Chiefs’ biggest offensive weapon active and on the field in the playoffs.

The Patrick Mahomes way of dealing with such setbacks

Patrick Mahomes is a warrior when it comes to dealing with injuries. Though he has suffered a few scares due to injuries, he has started in 93 of the possible 96 games since becoming the Chiefs’ starting QB. His way to roll? Just patch it up and roll with it for the team.

Mahomes suffered a dislocated kneecap during a clash against the Denver Broncos in the 2019 regular season. But even then, he missed just the next two games and led his team to Super Bowl glory that season.

During a playoff clash with the Cleveland Browns in the 2020 season, Mahomes suffered a concussion.

He came back the next game but played through a turf toe injury in the Super Bowl. And his performance did get hampered as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ran riot that day. The 2022 NFL and Super Bowl MVP suffered a foot injury in the regular season in December 2022. The next week, he played through the injury again and helped his team against the Broncos.  So Mahomes deals with the injuries by playing through them. And that is exactly what he did to win Super Bowl LVII.
